Yesterday’s Medicine: Cinnamon
A classic sanded cinnamon hard candy – tasty, warm with cinnamon flavor, without being alarmingly hot. Made in small batches for us in a small confectionary that opened in the 1800s, when cinnamon was still a medicine and people used sugar for health, well-being, and as a medicine. Approximately 12 ounces in a modern jar with a screw-on lid for freshness. Store in a cupboard away from heat and sun to avoid stickiness.
A Bit of History
Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years for many purposes such as embalming, healing such ailments as stomach distress and colds, and inspiring love as an aphrodisiac as it awakens the body and the heart. On a symbolic and spiritual level, cinnamon held a place in such texts as this quote in Song of Solomon in the Bible, listed as amongst the most honored spices:
“…nard and saffron,
with henna and nard,
nard and saffron,
calamus and cinnamon,
with every kind of incense tree,
with myrrh and aloes,
and all the finest spices.”
Today, many candies are made with artificial and natural cinnamon.
