A Bit of History
Rock candy, or rock sugar, has a venerable history as an early preservative and medicine. In the 1800s, it was an important part of the most popular saloon drink—rock n’rye. Civil War soldiers were said to use it as a medicine, preservative, and treat, most likely from packages from home.
