A Bit of History

The pomegranate, a native from Iran to the Himalayas was cultivated throughout the Mediterranean and MidEast since ancient times. The plant was esteemed for its beauty, abundance, and symbolic value, representing fertility. Pomegranates figure in the Qur’an and Bible – in Solomon’s temple, for example, two hundred pomegranates were engraved on two pillars which were at the front of the temple, and in the Song of Songs. Many believe the pomegranate, with its roots in the Middle East and Mediterranean, was the original apple in Eden. As a food, pomegranates were made into a syrup, added to various dishes, and eaten fresh.

“Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, And thy mouth is comely. Thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate Behind thy veil.”  – Song of Songs 4:3

“It is He who sends down water from the sky with which We bring forth the buds of every plant. From these We bring forth green foliage and close-growing grain, palm-trees lade with clusters of dates, vineyards and olive groves, and pomegranates alike and different. Behold their fruits when they ripen.” -Al-An’m 6:99
