A Bit of History
A favorite in the 17th and 18th centuries, candied petals were enjoyed as a sweet and topping on cakes and other confections and were said to contain healing properties. The rose likely originated in China while the violet was popular in France. Napoleon’s wife Josephine loved the violet, adding to its popularity. Once she fell out of favor, the violet fell out, too. These petals are from a shop in Toulouse, France that opened in 1818.
