A Bit of History
The orange tree originated in China. Portuguese explorers brought the fruit to the Mediterranean and they, and Spanish explorers, brought oranges to Florida in the 16th century. They were later shipped to northern ports where they were a favorite of European Americans including George Washington whose enslaved chef Hercules likely used them. Fruits were part of some of the most exquisite 18th and 19th century desserts.
