A Bit of History
Hot spices have a presence in countries throughout the world, from the cinnamon bark of Sri Lanka to the chili peppers of Mexico – used as a medicine, flavoring, and means of concealing the taste of bad food. They found a ready place in candies, especially in the late 19th and 20th centuries when they appeared in everything from candy drops to the 1930s Red Hots, one of the earliest mouth-burning “sweets.”
