A Bit of History
The pecan is a native to the United States – some trees are said to live up to 1,000 years. The Algonquins, among other Native Americans throughout North America, relied on the nut because it was bountiful, flavorful and easy-to-crack. Later, an enslaved nurseryman named Antoine, created a hybrid making the pecans we enjoy today. The popularity of the pecan in the U.S. is second to only the peanut – which actually is not a nut at all. The cinnamon comes from the ground bark of an evergreen tree.
