Handmade Traditional Orange Peels


We make these peels by hand in the original way– cut and cleaned of the pith, boiled four times, soaked in the sugar syrup, then left to dry. The result: a bitter-sweet confection great for cooking, as an ornament atop cookies and cakes, and as a treat on their own. Comes with approximately 8 pieces. TIME SENSITIVE with a two week shelf-life. Made-to-order. Orange peel glace is also available. Comes in a heat-sealed bag with the history on a label.

A Bit of History

The orange tree originated in China. Portuguese explorers brought the fruit to the Mediterranean and they, and Spanish explorers, brought oranges to Florida in the 16th century. They were later shipped to northern ports where they were a favorite of European Americans including George Washington whose enslaved chef Hercules likely used them. Fruits were part of some of the most exquisite 18th and 19th century desserts, and some of the most talented chefs were African Americans.
