A Bit of History
The licorice plant arrived in North America with the British. The root was used as a medicine, toothbrush, spice, and flavoring by the Native Americans, enslaved Americans, and eventually, Civil War soldiers, among others. By the turn-of-century, the licorice was in candy stores, apothecaries, and other places that sold candy. Favorites included the Good n’ Plenty, originally made in 1893, and the late 1800s Licorice Allsorts.
