Handmade Traditional Lemon Peels
We make these peels by hand in the original way- cut and cleaned of the pith, boiled four times, soaked in the sugar syrup, then left to dry. The result: a bitter-sweet confection great for cooking, as an ornament atop cookies and cakes, and as a treat on their own. Each heat sealed bag comes with approximately 8 pieces. TIME SENSITIVE with a two week shelf-life. Made-to-order. Lemon peel glace is also available.
A Bit of History
The Spanish brought oranges and lemons to Florida in the 16th century. They were later shipped to northern ports were they were a favorite of European Americans, including George Washington whose enslaved chef Hercules likely used them. Fruits were part of some of the most exquisite 18th and 19th century desserts, and some of the most talented chefs of the times were enslaved African Americans.
