Cherry Mash

Candy Bars Go To War

Combination candy bars first reached consumers in 1912. A few years later, they went to war with the Doughboys of World War I who came home proclaiming their joys. Candy bars were an instant hit – and why wouldn’t they be?

The Postwar Candy Bar Boom

By the 1930s, up to 100,000 candy bars were on the market, most only available regionally. Cherry Mash, Peanut Chews, Peanut Butter Cups… and so many more found their way into American homes, movie theaters, and lunchboxes. Although the number of candy bars on the market has dwindled, they remain a beloved on-the-go snack or mini-indulgence.

Chocolate Covered Peanuts

Chocolate Lovers, Rejoice!

Enjoy the ultimate in finger foods, satisfyingly sweet. At the turn of the century, machinery enabled candy-makers to quickly and inexpensively coat just about anything with sugar and chocolate, chocolate covered peanuts, almonds, raisins, caramels, marshmallows, and other tasty treats became all the rage. In fact, chocolate covered fruit and nuts were so popular, folks at home sent boxes along to the WWI soldiers.

What is Bridge Mix, Anyway?

Chocolate covered nuts were a popular theater snack as well as a hit with card players. Bridge players in the 1920s – 1950s sat around tables for entire evenings, obsessed with their favorite game. Put down their cards to eat? Forget it! That’s where bridge mix was handy – pieces so small they could snack with one hand and hold their cards with the other. Comes in a 4 oz heat-sealed bag with the history on the label.

Chocolate Covered Devil Dogs

A different kind of cake this Easter! The Devil Dog was created in 1926 and eventually came under the Drake family’s line of cakes. The Devil Dog, now known as a snack cake started out as Devil’s food cake. What is the difference between Devil’s food cake and ordinary chocolate cake? No one can say for sure…but here’s what we do know: Number 1: the Devil Dog was the nick-name for the rugged Marines who fought in WWI. Perhaps the force behind the name, Devil Dog? Again, no one knows for sure. Number 2: The Drake Brothers bought the Devil Dogs in the 1950s as portable foods grew in stature. And Number 3: the Drake Company had always been masters of marketing, holding lavish affairs for its staff and advertising widely. In fact, in 1909 Drake’s commissioned a ragtime song called “Drake’s Cake Walk.” Comes packaged as shown with story on the label. Includes a True Treats Easter card!

Vanilla Buttercreams

These venerable candies were celebrated when they appeared in the late 1800s, with their creamy filling encased in smooth dark or milk chocolate.

Buttercreams were given as gifts or served as dessert, nicely displayed on a plate. They were also a gift in “courtship” and a beach-time and holiday delight.  Most buttercreams were filled or flavored by fruit, as well as chocolate or vanilla, both highly popular flavors then, as today.

Like many chocolates, buttercreams pair nicely with fruits and nuts, a traditional combination going back to the 1800s, and go well with wine, tea or coffee, after a meal or as a mid-day pick-me-up. As for the vanilla filling: Vanilla was considered an exotic flavor, with roots in Mesoamerica where it grew side-by-side with the cacao tree.  The perfect buttercream filling!

Comes six pieces in a truffle box with our own keepsake card containing an historic image plus the story of buttercreams.
